BELLE ISLE PARK RECREATION

Vehicles entering the island require a recreation passport. Passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders do not require a passport.

The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

RUNNING & WALKING
 

Belle Isle is loved by runners and walkers and is home to many races and charity walks throughout the year. The exterior road that circles the park is about a 6-mile route. Download the Belle Isle Highlights Map and take a self-guided tour of the island on your walk or run. Pets are welcome at the park, but must be on a leash that is 6 feet or shorter.

BICYCLING
 

Bicyclists enjoy miles of bike lanes on the island and the scenic views of the Detroit skyline and Canada. Bikes are available to rent by the hour through Riverside Kayak Connection at their two locations - the Flynn Pavilion and at Belle Isle Beach.

  • Solo Bicycle: $7/hour

  • Tandem Bicycle: $10/hour

NATURE TRAILS
 

Belle Isle features a rare wet-mesic forest that contains specimens that mimic the Detroit ecosystem that existed hundreds of years ago. Forests like this were found throughout southeastern Michigan after the glacial period. Explore the unique nature and species of the forest all year long.

GOLF

The Belle Isle Golf Range is an outdoor,

9-acre golf practice facility with a 30 station grass driving range, chip & putt practice area with sand bunkers, USGA compliant sand-based putting greens, and a 6 hole mini-golf course. Managed by Golf Detroit.

WATER SPORTS
 

Explore the Detroit River or the inland canals by boat  Small craft boat launches are located near the Beach and the Flynn Pavilion. Riverside Kayak Connection offers rentals, group paddles, tours, and lessons.

  • Canoes: $15/hour

  • Pedal Boat: $15/hour

  • Solo Kayak: $10/hour

  • Tandem Kayak: $15/hour

  • Stand Up Paddle Board: $15/hour

ATHLETIC FIELDS & LEAGUES
 

Come Play Detroit manages the athletic complex on Belle Isle. The island features facilities for softball, football, basketball, handball, racquetball, and tennis.  

  • Softball Field: $25/hour; $1,000/day

  • Football Field: $25/hour; $500/day

  • Basketball Court: $20/hour; $500/day

  • Handball Court: $10/hour; $250/day

  • Tennis Court: $10/hour; $250/day

FISHING
 

Belle Isle features fishing piers on the south and north sides of the island. A fishing license is required to fish in the Detroit River or any other water body on Belle Isle. Buy a license online at local license retailer or www.michigan.gov/dnr

PLAYGROUNDS
 

Playgrounds of various sizes and themes are scattered throughout the island. The Kids Row Playscape, located near the Giant Slide on Central Ave, is the largest and most popular playground.

ROWING
 

The Detroit Boat Club Crew is the oldest rowing club in North America and operates out of the Detroit Boat House on Belle Isle. Members of the Friends of Detroit Rowing have access to indoor rowing training, learn-to-row programs, and competitive and recreational programs for youth and adults.
